DATA COMPARISONS AND CAVEATS

STUDENT TYPE

The following provides the types of students who are included in the Guided Pathway dashboard on the LaunchBoard:

First-Time Students, Including Summer and Early College

First-time students include students who enrolled in community college for the first-time ever in higher education as non-special admit credit students in the fall term of the selected year.

TIMEFRAMES

Information is provided for the following years (unless noted otherwise):

  • 2019-2020
  • 2018-2019
  • 2017-2018
  • 2016-2017
  • 2015-2016
  • 2014-2015
  • 2013-2014
  • 2012-2013
  • 2011-2012

Academic years include the leading summer plus fall, winter, and spring terms. For the new Completed Transfer Level Math and English metrics (GP 541, 542, 543), data will only be displayed for complete trimeframes allowing 3-years for credit ESL students to complete. Therefore, for these three metrics, data is only not available after 2016-17.

COHORT VIEW

Cohort views display information based on a cohort of students. Therefore, the specific students will be the same for all metrics displayed on the dashboard. The first-time student cohort is defined above in the Student Type section.

DATA DISAGGREGATION

Value options: Female, Male, Non-Binary, Unknown/Non-Respondent, Multiple Values Reported

  • Race/Ethnicity:

Value options: American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Filipino, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Two or More Races, White, Unknown/Non-Respondent, Multiple Values Reported

  • Perkins Economically Disadvantaged:

Value options: Economically Disadvantaged per Perkins definition and Not Economically Disadvantaged per Perkins definition

COMPARISON GROUPS

Comparison data is provided for the following:

  • Statewide: is based on the 114 colleges plus the three noncredit institutions. Counts, dollar values, and percentages are medians across all students in the state
  • Macro-region Median: is based on all the colleges and noncredit institutions within a specific macroregion. Counts, dollar values, and rates are medians across all students in the macroregion.
  • Micro-region Median: is based on all colleges and noncredit institutions within a specific microregion. Counts, dollar values, and rates are medians across all students in the microregion.
  • District Median: is based on all of the colleges and noncredit institutions within a specific district. Counts, dollar values, and rates are medians across all students in the district.
  • College Median: is based on the college selected. Counts, dollar values, and rates are medians across all students in the college.

DATA LIMITATIONS

Missing and Suppressed Information

  • Link to FERPA and Complementary Suppression documentation from dashboards.
  • Masking is performed across the subgroups present (e.g. gender, age group, race/ethnicity), and over the primary attributes of data (year, metric, and locale, as well as journey, program, credit status, completion status, and first-time/returning status where present as a drilldown in the dashboard).

Deduplication

In cases where students are enrolled at more than one college or district, and have provided conflicting information regarding goals or characteristics, assignment will be handled as described below.

DATA SOURCE

  • Community college metrics are based on records submitted by community colleges to the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office Management Information System (MIS)

DEFINITION DESCRIPTIONS

  • Description: Description of the metric
  • Student Type: n/a
  • Data Source: The entity providing data used in the calculation
  • Data Element: The specific data elements used from each data source
  • Calculation: The specific calculations used to derive the data value
  • Denominator: The universe of students included
  • Value Type: The type of data value populated for the metric
  • Drilldowns: The drilldown options (Age Group, Race/Ethnicity, Gender, Economically
  • SSM Alignment: Notes specific to how the metric aligns or does not align to a similar metric in the Student Success Metrics dashboard
  • Notes: General information or caveats about the data for the metric

For cohort view, use information from first term of enrollment in the cohort at the institutional level. If a student is first-time at more than one college in the district and the student has conflicting gender information, then use information provided at each college at the college locale. if a student has more than one gender or unreported anywhere in the system at the same district, regional or statewide levels, assign the student to the "multiple values reported" category

SB04 includes X which corresponds to unknown/non-respondent. This category is different than "multiple values reported" which is where students are placed if there is conflicting information at different colleges in the system

"B" for Non-binary is a new value added for SB04 in the summer 2019

Notes

This metric has been updated to align to the definition provided by MIS on 10/2/19 to denote Economically Disadvantaged status for Perkins. Based on guidance that these values are captured by one of the other included codes or that these are not uniquely related to indicators of socio-economic disadvantage, the following values were removed for SF21: F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, GB, GG, GW, GW, WF. For the same reasons, the following values were removed for SV03: 1N, 2N, 3N, 4N. SC01 data element has been added.

If a student enrolls at more than one college and is considered economically disadvantaged at one college and not the other, the student is still considered economically disadvantaged.

In GP 2.0 for the 2019-20 build, this metric was GP 406 Retained Fall to Spring. When a cohort view was added to the Student Success Metrics dashboard, the metric SM 453C All Cohort Students Who Were Retained from First Primary Term of Enrollment to the Subsequent Primary Term was created since students can start in any term in the SSM cohort view. Since we are attempting to align GP with SSM cohort view, GP 453C was used even though it really does correspond to Retained Fall to Spring since GP cohort students can only start in the fall term

Notes

Data will not be displayed for students who start in 2017-18, 2018-19 or 2019-20 since credit ESL students are allowed three full academic years to complete from their first term of enrollment

Incomplete grades are included in Course Success and Completed Transfer Level Math and English in the District in the First Year but are not included in Earned Nine or More Career Education Units Within the District in a Single Year, Successfully Completed Unit Thresholds in Fall Term, Successfully Completed Unit Thresholds in the Selected Year, and Average Number of Units Accumulated by Associate Degree Earners, due to how the underlying data elements are constructed.

Includes completion of the courses in the same district only

CB25 COURSE-GENERAL-EDUCATION-STATUS has been added in summer 2019 to account for courses that are not listed on the TOP codes indicated in the calculation above but that fulfill general education requirements for mathematics/quantitative reasoning or English composition in the context of transfer, degree, and certificate program.
